The College of Arts and Sciences formally opened the conduct on its list of activities for the Academic Year with the success of the Chill and Thrill: Battle of the Bands and Dance Competition at the Student Center, last Friday, October 20.

Students from the different departments of the college gathered in revelry to showcase their rhythm and groove during the said competition.

CAS departments included the ACES, ICONS, HIBE, Psych Society, and Kwago Society โ€“ all of which form the College of Arts and Sciences Student Organization (CASSO).

The program was a two-part competition for Bands and Dance groups formed by the students of CAS.

The Battle of the Bands, after an electrifying joust for the top spot saw the ICONSโ€™ โ€œSangkis Loloโ€ clinch first place, courtesy of their prolific performance of the hit song Raining in Manila by Lola Amour.

โ€œWe played just for fun but with a competitive spirit. We were not sure that we will be the winners since our competitors were also good, so we just gave our best and enjoyed our own performance. And apparently, we won the BOTB. Shout out kay kuya Dan na supportive,โ€ Donald Christopher Buted commented on the notion of their performance.

Following ICONS was the Psych Society in second place while Kwago strummed on third place. The collective effort of the ACES and HIBE would place them fourth on the standings.

On the other hand, the Psych Societyโ€™s dance group dubbed MARIPOSA mesmerized the crowd during the showdown of moves and grooves, eventually earning them the right to title honors.

โ€œActually, none of us expected to win. We were all just enjoying the moment and making the most of the limited time we had. I kept pushing these psych majors to just enjoy and that win or lose, the Psych Society would still be proud,โ€ Symonne Daneal Anne Monroy, President of the Psych Society uttered in regard to MARIPOSAโ€™s stellar efforts.

The ICONS however, proved yet another strong showing as they rallied onwards to trail the Psych Society in the dance competition, landing on second, while the Kwagos completed the podiums on third. The ACES/HIBE duo would again reiterate their band performance, bagging the fourth place.

CASSO President, Charley Dominique Domingo later stated in an interview that the idea for the event was to celebrate the exceptional talent within CAS.

โ€œOur main goal was to create an opportunity for our students to showcase their artistic abilities and bring the whole CAS community together,โ€ she added.

Domingo also clarified on the humor of the event being meant for her birthday by stating, โ€œIt wasnโ€™t planned intentionally on my birthday. The timing might have seemed serendipitous, but it was purely coincidental. The final date was chosen collectively, not solely by me.โ€

After a hard-fought and clearly successful first event, the CASSO looks forwards from here for their activities as the new Academic Year unfolds pages off the calendar.
