Northwestern University held its inauguration 2023 today, October 19, at the Aquino Multi-purpose Center centered on the theme โ€œPioneering the Future.โ€ It was attended by almost 500 students from different colleges and organizations.

Dr. Gregoria S. Najorda, Vice President for Academic Affairs delivered her message emphasizing the exemplary role of student leaders in the university.

โ€œLeaders should not serve. Leaders should be followers,โ€ said Dr. Najorda.

Moreover, PCPT Kristian Lee G. Badua, RCrim Assistant Unit Chief, Provincial Operations Unit, Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office, joined the event as the Guest Speaker and induction officer.

โ€œAddan to latta ti sabali nga studyante nga mangibaga that you’re not that good to be a student leader, but mind you, those are parts of your leadership career,” he stated in his talks.

The event was hosted by the Supreme Student Council, where the oath-taking ceremony as well as the turnover of the SSC position, led by former SSC President Jezreel Larry Caunca.

Meanwhile, Prof. Agustina A. Dancel-Matias, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs also reiterated the importance of inauguration to the student leaders. โ€œInauguration is an act of commitment; commitment to the position withheld, commitment to their fellow students who belong to their respective colleges and departments, and commitment to the university as partners as well,โ€ said Prof. Matias.

In the afternoon event, several speakers gave meaningful lectures to the student leaders. Prof. Matias led the talks about leadership values and principles. Meanwhile, Ms. Joeann Perez, Election Officer II, tackled voterโ€™s education.

โ€œApay nga agregister kayo as voter? Syempre number 1, to exercise your right to vote. Paano mo sasabihin na mahal mo ang taong-bayan ng Pilipinas when you donโ€™t even exercise your right to vote,โ€ said Ms. Perez, pointing out the value of being a voter.

On the other hand, Ms. Lei Geeh Lumen, Events Manager Officer-OSA, discussed project management. Also, Mr. Caunca gave a talk about mastering the art of meetings. โ€œYou should have a clear agenda, it saves time and avoids confusion. Your meetings would be more efficient and effective kasi naka-focus na kayo sa agenda na pag-uusapan ninyo,โ€ said Mr. Caunca, stressing the clear understanding of agenda during meetings.

Lastly, Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, university president, delivered his speech as well as words of gratitude.

โ€œI would like to congratulate you for taking on the challenge of being the leaders of your different constituents whether they are your colleges or different groups/clubs,โ€ said Atty. Nicolas.

The success of today’s activities marks the start of a new era of leadership where the future is a keen priority.
