Sutherland Philippines, a global business process and technology management services provider, conducted a focus group discussion with selected student leaders among the different student organizations of Northwestern University in the Exhibit Room on March 8, 2022.
The discussion was attended by 12 student leaders, as per recommendation from the Guidance Center and the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), through the approval of the University President.
The Supreme Student Council (SSC), Corps of Cadets (COC), College of Maritime Education Student Organization (COMESO), Federation of Allied Health Sciences Students (FAHSS), College of Business Education Student Organization (COBESO), College of Arts and Sciences Student Organization (CASSO), College of Criminal Justice Education Student Organization (CCJESO), Young Educatorsโ Society (YES), College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology Student Organization (CEATSO), AFS School Club – NWU, Debate Society (DebSoc), and Peer Facilitators Club (PFC) were present during the discussions.
Mr. Victor โSonnyโ Emmanuel N. Aguilar Jr., Director of Talent Acquisition at Sutherland led the talks about career development in the fields correlating to business process outsourcing (BPO), highlighting the fact that BPO careers are not dead-end jobs โ opposing the common stigma about BPO.
They also asked Prof. Agustina Matias, Acting Dean of OSA, to send them a list of graduates to give priority and perhaps help by offering work-from-home jobs to the graduates. This further backed the thought of Professor Matias to not leave anyone unemployed after graduation.
According to Aguilar, Sutherland is an organic company that grows by expanding sites and not by purchasing companies. โSutherland is not just an IT company that is growing based on the model of providing jobs outside of the Metro, we bring jobs back into the province. Our difference from others is that they grow from acquiring companies. Sutherland is organic. We donโt purchase companies; we grow by growing sites in different locations in the Philippines. Mostly 70% of our sites are located in the provinces,โ he expressed.
Aguilar pointed out that their goal is to reach out to colleges and campuses, connect and partner with them, so later on, they will have a workforce coming into Sutherland. He also stressed that they are eyeing a partnership with the University to provide graduates with jobs and avoid unemployment.
