The Department of Nursing of the College of Allied Health and Sciences (CAHS) officiated the annual capping, pinning, and candle lighting ceremony for the Level II BS Nursing (BSN), Class Batch of 2025, held at the Aquino Multi-purpose Center on April 12, 2023.

A total of 222 students enrolled in BSN Level II attended the ceremony; 44 students were male and 178 students were female, donning their white uniforms.

Prof. Imelda M. Dawang, the Head of the Nursing Department, remarked the symbolism of the event. She reiterated that the event is the highlight of every student nurse’s journey which symbolizes the beginning of their socialization into the nursing profession.

β€œThe lamp lighting signifies the burn decision of these young students to be trained, to care for the sick. This is not just nursing tradition, but a symbol of their hard work and dedication towards the nursing course, practice, and clinical,” she stated.

β€œFurther, it gives pride and joy to our school and motivates our students to persevere more through the rigors of training ahead. To our dear students, this is an opportunity to celebrate this accomplishment, please make the most of it,” Prof. Dawang added.

After then came the narrative of Florence Nightingale’s life and story, followed by the entrance of Florence Nightingale, portrayed by Prof. Maydonette Aquino, along with the ceremonial lighting of the candles with the Nightingale’s lamp.

Moreover, the student nurses of Level II were presented and conferred under the supervision of Prof. Wiljohn M. Dela Cruz, Level II Chairman; Prof. Imelda Dawang, Head of the Department of Nursing; and Prof. Charliemane A. Bullalayao, CAHS Dean.

β€œAs you receive your caps, your pins, and lights your candles. Remember that these symbols represent more than just your achievement in nursing school. They represent your commitment to the nursing profession. Your dedication to your parents and your desire to make a positive impact on this world. Never forget that nursing is more than just a job, it is a calling,” Prof. Bullalayao emphasized.

As the highlight of the event, Prof. Myla Wilhelmina R. Gamayon, Level I Chairman; Prof. Harvey Ganal, Level III Chairman; Ms. Leofel Fernandez, Ms. Elaine Rose T. Ramiro, and Ms. Jeflyn Navarro, along with Mr. Gohmer G. Guillermo, Chief Nurse of Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital (GRBASMH); and Ms. Maris Pichay, Operating Room Nurse Supervisor of GRBASMH, and Prof. Charliemane A. Bullalayao, CAHS Dean, placed the caps, pins, and lamps on the 222 candidates.

After which, Ms. Daphney P. Tabigne, one of the stellar students of the Level II Batch, enunciated their class history. She narrated their journeys and ordeals in the nursing profession. As she proclaimed their story, the candidates prepared a class song dedicated to their parents and guardians to show their appreciation for their love and support.

Ms. Tabigne stated, β€œIt was like a roller coaster ride. We have experienced different struggles. But in the end, we conquered and remained strong. And we realized that taking up nursing was never easy. We need to learn diverse topics to deliver the best quality of care to our clients, yet our burning passion keeps us seeing that we can do it. It is still a long process to go.”

Furthermore, Ms. Maydonette Aquino, instructor, led the nursing students in reciting the Florence Nightingale Pledge. On the other hand, Ms. Hannah Mae M. Agustin, the first-rate student in the BSN II Class, expressed her gratitude and acclaimed with her fellow batchmates for the milestone they have achieved.

β€œThis is one of the moments in our lives that we cannot just take for granted as do all the skills and reminders imparted by everyone with us here tonight-which have formed and prepared us. This humbling event we get to experience signifies a bright future waiting for us, of course, a heap of the rigorous but hopeful journey is yet to be discovered,” she said.

β€œAgain, to everyone who’s been part of this journey, every drop in the ocean counts and we would forever be grateful to those who helped us sail through troubled waters for you deserve a part of this achievement,” Ms. Agustin concluded.
