NWU takes part in the 3rd OSSEI NWC, grabs bronze in group category

The Review, the official student publication of Northwestern University, bagged 3rd place in the Multimedia Journalism-Group Category during the 3rd National Webinars and Writing Competitions on Campus Journalism conducted by the Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc. (OSSEI) via Zoom Videoconferencing App on October 16 and 23, 2021.

On the first day of the webinar series, Prof. Ben G. Domingo, Jr., Chairperson of the Technical Committee on Journalism of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), discussed Labor Migration Reporting. It was followed by Prof. Jimmy Domingo, a lecturer at De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University who tackled Multimedia Journalism.

Mr. Melvin Gascon, a writer from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, talked about Fighting Back with Facts during the second conference on October 23, 2021. He shared 10 Principles of Journalism, including journalistic truth, gatekeeping, news selection, agenda-setting, news values, independence, accountability, common flaws, fighting disinformation, and the multiple paths to a news story. He also highlighted fighting disinformation through verification, wherein journalists should investigate, assess, confirm, and weigh evidence to search for the truth.

Ms. Joyce Babe P. Panares, News Editor of Manila Standard Today, shared the Fundamental Principles of Editorial Writing. She emphasized that opinion pieces must be grounded in facts. Further facts needed in writing opinion pieces were also discussed, including Google search operators and verification sites.

Writing and multimedia competitions were organized after each session to assess the participantsโ€™ journalistic skills in different categories.

Winners for the opinion, news writing, and multimedia journalism events were posted on the organizationโ€™s Facebook page on October 30, 2021. The competitions include opinion writing, news reporting, and multimedia journalism, both in individual and group categories.

The event was attended by not less than 20 universities and colleges all over the Philippines.
